Benders 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training

Program Overview

The Benders 200 Hour Teacher Training program is co-facilitated by Michele Barnes and Leslie Heisz, both of whom are registered as 500 Hour yoga teachers with Yoga Alliance. This means that, at minimum, they have completed 500 hours of intensive training to teach yoga.

The training program itself is also registered Yoga Alliance and is comprised of 12 full weekends of study and practice. This allows the student teacher time to integrate yoga as a lifestyle while learning how to teach this time-honoured practice. The program covers both the classic and modern texts of yogic philosophy, an in-depth study of asana, pranayama, meditation, teaching methodology, and anatomy/physiology.

The program has been approved by Yoga Alliance to be offered both ‘virtually/online’ as well as ‘in-studio/onsite’. This enables us to offer a method of training that meets your specific needs. Over the course of the program, students will be assigned home study packages designed to deepen their
knowledge of the practices and complement their studies. The packages will include both practical and written components.

Making a decision to take this program changes your commitment to yoga. Teaching requires a deeper awareness of the practice, and greater responsibility and clarity. You will need a strong commitment to your own practice, not only for yourself, but also as a means of clearing yourself to be present for and attentive to others. Your own practice will also help you to cope with the emotional impact and energy required for this course, so it is essential that you develop a regular and consistent home practice. Students will also be expected to attend weekly yoga classes taught by a certified yoga teacher at the studio(s) of their choice. You will be required to maintain a record of all classes attended, copies of which will be submitted periodically to the Program Director with your assignments.

There is no written examination at the end of the program. Rather, students will practice teach throughout the course, culminating in teaching a full yoga class that they have designed. The Program Director will regularly assess the students through observation of student participation and review of their assignments. Students must be able to demonstrate in their practice teaching and assignments that they are able to apply the information they have acquired to the development and teaching of an actual class.

In order to fulfill the requirements for certification, the student must complete all components of the program (see “Requirements for Certification” below for complete details). During this program we want to support you in your development to the best of our ability. As such, you will have the opportunity to address any issues or concerns through individual and group discussion.
